.The brief history of o the hammock is that they originated in Central America about 1000 years ago. At that time they were woven in inch wide bands of fiber from the Hammock tree. By the time Columbus hit the new world hammocks had spread throughout Mexico, the Caribbean and large parts of South America and were by then made of softer fibers and ropes. Columbus was so impressed that he took a large number of them back to Spain where they were modified into a more sheet like form and used extensively by the military especially the Navy. These small compact hammocks could easily be stowed away between the wood beams and even used in emergencies to stop leaks.
Today at High Mountain Hoopla we import the highest grade Nicaraguan Hammock from the Elmer Sauzo Family. Elmer is 92 years old and the current patriarch of large family of 36, all in the hammock business. He is the perfect example of trying to protect an art form that has been passed to him from his grand fathers. He and his family basically employ half of his village. Beyond this he will tell you of his greatest honor which was to win the national award for making the finest hammock in Central America. He was then sent to Italy to represent Nicaragua in a world competition. As if that wasn't’t a great enough honor he will happily recount the competition which was held in the 30’s;and as young man he went on to win the World title and had the honor presenting his hammock personally to the Pope at The Vatican. These heritages are important to preserve whether they are from our Native American Indians, The Loom Crafters of Guatemala or The Hammock makers of Central America our goal is to tell these individuals stories and show the individual beauty of their Arts. HMH’s site would also like to support these organizations by helping others network with them.
